To be eligible for a flight instructor certificate or rating a person must:
Be at least 18 years of age;
Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, then the Administrator may place such operating limitations on that applicant’s flight instructor certificate as are necessary;
Hold either a commercial pilot certificate or airline transport pilot certificate with:
An aircraft category and class rating that is appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought; and
An instrument rating, or privileges on that person’s pilot certificate that are appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought.
Study Assignments in our curriculum reference official FAA Handbooks and Manuals covering all knowledge areas for this course. However, online or in-house classes may be a better fit for your learning style and to supplement official materials. Discuss with your instructor options available that best meet your needs.
Total Time: There are no set requirements for hours of dual training for the CFI, CFII, or MEI. However, you must have at least 15 hours as pilot in command of multi-engine aircraft before you take the MEI practical examination.
Examination Requirements: You must take and pass the appropriate FAA written examination with a score of 70% or better, then take and pass the practical flight test examination with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner.
